Slavery Personal Impact: Slaves were kept in inhumane conditions which consisted of being whipped, castrated, and branded and many other barbaric types of treatment. Slaves worked sometimes 18 hours a day of labor under harsh weather conditions with ruthless overseers. The female slaves were often raped and sexually abused. The slave owners also reduced exposure to the outer world to make sure slaves had a less chance of trying to escape. In some of the slave states educating slaves was illegal but in others like Kentucky it wasn’t. To make sure that the slaves didn’t try to escape the owners would make the slaves dependent to them by being their only access to food and assuring they were uneducated.
