The Dred Scott Decision stated that African-Americans were not intended to be American citizens, and African-Americans cannot sue in court to gain their freedom. Dred Scott was born into a slave family in Virginia. He was then sold to Dr. John Emerson in The U.S. Army. Afterward, he was taken to Illinois, which at that time was a free state. He eventually moved with John Emerson to the Wisconsin Territory, which allowed slavery. This decision was put in effect by the U.S. Supreme court due to Dred Scott suing for his freedom.
