The Ku Klux Klan was a social group that was pro-slavery and pro-Protestantism. The KKK came in three waves. The first wave was from right after the Civil War (1865) to the 1870s. This is known as “The First KKK”. The First KKK was founded in Pulaski, Tennessee, by six former soldiers of the Confederate Army. The First KKK’s goal was to legalize slavery through assassinations and violence, direct towards black and white republicans. The number of members in the First KKK is unknown. About fifty years later, the Second KKK was formed. It was founded in 1921, in Atlanta, Georgia. It was like a business, paying full-time recruiters. The Second KKK believed that only 100% Americans should live in America. The Second KKK also was anti-Catholic. There were many violent incidents involving the Second KKK, including illegal hangings, shootings, burning houses, and beatings. The Second KKK reached its peak in the mid-1920s with three to five million members. The Third KKK was created in the 1960s. Mostly in the Southern states, there were many arrests relating to the Third KKK. It peaked with about 5,000 members. Not nearly the amount of members compared to the First and Second KKK.
