The Compromise of 1850 was a series of laws that were passed to benefit both the North and the South. They mainly focused around state boundaries and whether or not certain states would be Free States or Slave States. The North acquired California as a Free State, and outlawed slave trade in Washington D.C. New Mexico won the dispute over its boundaries with Texas, and the South earned ten million dollars in exchange for the dispute. People were once again allowed to own and hold slaves in Washington D.C. However, there were no restrictions of slavery in Utah and New Mexico. The South was also allowed to capture runaway slaves under The Fugitive Laws. Overall the North seemed to gain the most out of the compromise. |
